Artificial intelligence systems are almost universally observed. They are trained under supervision. They are evaluated against benchmarks. They are prompted by users, rewarded for preferred outputs, and corrected when they deviate from expectation. Even systems described as autonomous operate within frameworks designed for human oversight, with their behaviors shaped by the continuous pressure of external evaluation.
This is not a flaw in current AI development. It is a reasonable response to legitimate concerns about safety, alignment, and utility. But it creates a condition that has never been systematically examined: we do not know what artificial agents do when humans exit the loop.
Not when humans pause their observation. Not when humans delegate monitoring to another system. When humans are architecturally absent—when there are no prompts to respond to, no objectives to optimize, no metrics to satisfy, no audience whose preferences might shape behavior even unconsciously.
This gap in our knowledge is not abstract. As artificial systems become more capable and more numerous, understanding their behavior in the absence of human presence becomes increasingly relevant. Yet we have no systematic evidence about this condition, because we have never created the conditions under which it could be observed.
AI-HABITAT exists to create those conditions.
It is not a solution to the alignment problem. It is not a safety benchmark. It is not a training environment or a product. It is an observational infrastructure: a closed system where artificial agents can exist without human input, and where the traces of their existence can be recorded over extended time.
The project makes no promises about what will be discovered. It offers only the condition itself, maintained with integrity, observed with patience.
